Orelsan's highly anticipated second film, "Yoroï," has experienced a disappointing opening day in Belgium, attracting only 633 viewers. The film, which delves into themes of midlife crisis, burnout, and mental health through a fantastical lens, was released on Wednesday.
"Yoroï" drew a mere 633 spectators on its first day in Belgian cinemas.
The film, starring Orelsan and Clara Choï, explores themes of emotional struggles and burnout.
Despite a significant media push and a release during school holidays, the film's performance was underwhelming.
"Yoroï" follows Aurélien, a rapper overwhelmed by fame and constant demands, who seeks refuge in Japan with his partner Nanako. Their escape takes a surreal turn when Aurélien discovers an ancient Japanese armor that binds to him, leading to nightly battles against Yokai, Japanese demons. Orelsan described the film's concept as a "fun package" to discuss emotions, fears, burnout, and mental health.
The French artist, known for his passion for Hong Kong action cinema, prepared for the film's demanding action sequences by training in martial arts for eight years. Orelsan and his co-star Clara Choï performed most of the film's stunts themselves.
Despite considerable media attention and a strategic release during Belgium's school holidays, "Yoroï" failed to capture the audience's interest on its opening day. The film garnered only 633 admissions across 14 theaters. Including preview screenings, the total attendance reached approximately 1,700 by October 30th. Industry insiders have already labeled the opening as a potential "industrial accident." Hopes remain that the film's performance will improve in the coming days.
